At some point in the early 1890s, renowned Boston photographer G. Waldon Smith produced a number of studio photos of Boston players that have become well-known among collectors today. Thumbnail images of those photos were turned into a team composite photo that, while appearing to be a team cabinet, was actually the design for one side of a scorecard for an 1890s Old Timer's Day. The photographic images of 14 Boston players appeared on one side of the scorecard, with the actual scorecard on the reverse. The handsome piece is quite rare and valuable today.
Presented here is the remnants of such a piece, each of the individual images from the composite carefully trimmed away and re-mounted in what appears to be the pages of a 19th Century scrapbook. Artfully arranged, the layout of the images on the scrapbook page is different from the layout of the scorecard. The players featured are King Kelly (HOF), Bobby Lowe, Frank Selee (HOF), Billy Nash, John Clarkson (HOF), Steve Brodie, Tommy Tucker, Herman Long, Harry Stovey, Chas Bennett, Charlie Ganzel, Harry Staley, Joe Quinn, and Kid Nichols (HOF).
The scrapbook page has been cut down to size, backed with a newspaper article from the era. An extremely delicate piece, the individual images from a rare and valuable team composite can now be acquired in an affordable way!
