This stately portrait shows a star Cuban outfielder, considered one of the finest players of his day. He's a key player for this tobacco set and later became an early inductee into Cuba's own baseball Hall of Fame.
1909 Cabanas cards were distributed with that brand's cigarettes and supported a postseason exhibition visit by the Detroit Tigers. Twelve Americans appear alongside members of local Almendares and Habana teams. (Hall of Famers Ty Cobb and Sam Crawford did not make the trip, so aren't part of the set). The cards are rare and desirable among collectors, regardless of player and condition.
The SGC POOR 10 grade primarily reflects paper loss on its reverse, no doubt from an album that held Cabanas cards. The front shows a handful of creases and flecks at the corners, which do little to dim its colorful impression of an important star from that seminal era for international baseball. Most surviving examples from this set number in the single digits, making each one a prize of varying size!
