Many Negro League fans and collectors consider Martin Dihigo the key card for anything he appears in, even as serious-minded manager for a mid-1950s winter league team in this Venezuelan set. His superlative skills on the mound or with a bat in his hand make him an eduring comparison for two-way stars of any era, be they Babe Ruth or Shohei Ohtani.

This photo shows Dihigo in his late 40s, nearing a personal shift away from pro baseball and toward a bigger commitment to his Cuban homeland. While posthumous 1977 Cooperstown induction came several years too late for his personal appreciation, he had already been inducted by similar bodies in Cuba and Mexico and became baseball's first player to reach all three.

SGC's PR 1 grade reflects the card's rounded corners, vertical ink on its front, and corner toning on its back. It is otherwise well-centered with clear, legible text. The population report shows this single graded example, with no others listed by PSA, making it a true hobby rarity!

The set name (Album De Oro) and its brief back imply collectors purchased these square cards for mounting in at least one baseball album and the paucity of hobby examples tells us few managed to endure the decades since. The cards are rare enough that three or fewer examples of each of the set's subjects are known to exist. It's fortunate indeed that Dihigo managed to be one of those survivors.
