Satchel Paige seemed ageless in his ability to pitch with great skill and draw large crowds everywhere he played. Thanks to MLB's color line, it took until 1948 for the league to seek out his skills, when maverick owner Bill Veeck signed the legend to a Cleveland contract. He pitched mostly as a reliever for Cleveland, who rewarded Paige's patience, if we can call it that, with a World Series ring. (Paige moved on to St. Louis after Cleveland, pitched more often, and added a pair of All-Star seasons to his Cooperstown resume.)

This 1949 Bowman rookie card is considered one of the keys to the set and a beauty in design and visual impression. This SGC VG 3 exhibits touched corners, a crisp and clear central image, and modest hazing on the reverse. We find this a strong looking card for the grade and expect that many collectors agree.
