National Chicle, crosstown competitior to Goudey Gum, released this baseball set over a three year period, 1934-36, updating select player cards with new stats and team changes on the back. Cards from its #97-108 high series prove some of the toughest 1930s singles to find in peak condition, as National Chicle likely underprinted this series as they faced growing financial struggles.
Yankees infielder Robert "Red" Rolfe came into his own as this card hit the streets and its back notes his first .300 season in 1935, with four All-Star appearances to follow. (Like most high number cards, this #100 was released in 1936 shows the prior year's stats.)
The clean and colorful SGC EX 5 features good centering and art that shows Rolfe in the midst of on-field action. Slight corner rounding and some speckles on the reverse might be all that holds it back from a higher number. The tips on fielding are otherwise well-printed and proved an important part of Chicle's own approach to share the excitement of baseball with its collectors. SGC's population report shows about a dozen higher, depending how its counts from unspecified years are interpreted.
