National Chicle, crosstown competitior to Goudey Gum, released this baseball set over a three year period, 1934-36, updating select player cards with new stats and team changes on the back. While future Hall of Fame outfielder Earl Averill played with Cleveland all three years, this back text shows his 1935 hitting stats, so belongs to the 1936 version of this set. (His 1935 average rose an amazing 90 points for 1936, as Earl hit his career high with .378.)
Cards from its #97-108 high series prove some of the toughest 1930s singles to find in peak condition, as National Chicle likely underprinted this series as they faced growing financial struggles. The sharp, near-perfect SGC NM 7 features sharp corners and even, clean borders. Centering is a touch eastward, with one print spot along the right side. It's hard to find anything else to kvetch about for this card, as a beautiful example of National Chicle's Art Deco card style. Its high grade puts this card in select company, as SGC's population report for #100 shows just a handful at the 7+ level! Just two rate higher for those graded as part of the 1936 set.
