The American Tobacco Company produced Turkey Red cabinet cards as mail-in coupons in packs of Turkey Red, Fez and Old Mill brand cigarettes. These large-format cards use heavy stock, measure 5 ¾” x 8”, and feature beautiful lithographic art for 126 different subjects. Cards #1-76 show the checklist seen on Bergen's own card. Numbers 77-126 feature a Turkey Red advertisement. Due to their cabinet size, cards often show pinholes and back damage from mounting in scrapbooks or hanging on walls, with few ever attaining mid-to-high grades. They're among the most beautiful and desirable of all tobacco issues.
Bill Bergen's central image is near-perfect in artistic style and actual presentation. This PSA GD+ 2.5 reflects its staining along the top edge and modest haze on the back, which merits this technical grade. His card otherwise compares well with higher grades, thanks to its excellent color balance, registration, and fully legible back checklist. This is an excellent and accessible way to add one of that era's best defenders.
