Cuban catcher Jose Maria Fernandez played in four decades of pro ball and this terrific 1923-24 card shows him at 27, during his lengthy stint with Black Baseball teams made up primarily of Cuban stars. He last batted in Negro League play at age 51, capping an amazing career that has received Cooperstown consideration from the Negro League committee.
The SGC EX 5 grade reflects a superior main image, slight corner rounding, and minor print artifacts. Its clean surfaces and centering make it one of this set's best surviving and most appealing singles. Cards from this 1923-24 set often show handling damage when left unprotected, so most mid-grade examples stand out among the best known from what survives today. Just six cards appear on the combined SGC/PSA population reports, with none graded higher! Love of the Game is proud to offer several of this Cuban set's top cards.
