It's fortunate for baseball history (and collectors) that tobacco companies like Tomas Gutierrez produced sets from this region and era, as they offer some of our few clear baseball photos for players like "Mayari" Montalvo. His career covered several seasons of Negro League and Cuban winter league ball before an untimely passing in 1930. Each card of Montalvo is a rare chance to appreciate players who today would get daily coverage of their exploits and achievements.
The SGC EX 5 grade reflects slight corner rounding, a slight print tilt, and mark along its lower right edge. (A spot on its left edge appears to be from its original print process.) Cards from this 1923-24 set often show handling damage when left unprotected, so most mid-grade examples stand out as the best known from what survives today. Just six Mantalo cards appear on the combined SGC/PSA population reports, with none graded higher! Love of the Game is proud to offer several of this Cuban set's top cards.
