This PSA FR 1.5 of Chic (Chick) Gandil shows a future Black Sox player in his sole season as Cleveland's first baseman, before moving on to Chicago and eventual infamy. The dynamic composition and straight borders help Its central image shine through horizontal creasing, giving this card a visual impact of higher grades. Touched corners and centering a bit to the southwest round out its overall look. The population report shows just ten total M101-4 #64 graded with a blank back.
Printer Felix Mendelsohn based this set on 200 pictures of mid-1910s ballplayers and the American Card Catalog added its M101-4 designation. Many card backs featuring ads from different companies and The Sporting News distributed so many of these sets that even blank backs are often linked to them by implication. Recent research shows that some M101-4 advertisers gave groups of cards away as an incentive for in-person shopping and others sold their sets by mail order. While it's hard to be sure how blank-backed cards reached collectors, they prove scarce indeed today.
