Often heralded as the best-known Pulitzer-prize winning photograph, original Type I examples of Joe Rosenthal's "Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima" are exceedingly scarce, with only three known to have ever been certified by PSA/DNA. While this large format iteration of Rosenthal's iconic image remains far more affordable than the six-figure Type I's, it is no less striking; handsomely depicting six United States Marines on February 3, 1945 while hoisting the American flag atop Mount Suribachi on the Japanese island of Iwo Jima. 11" x 12" photo has been created from a duplicate negative but remains vintage, having been developed within a handful of years from when Rosenthal captured his award-winning masterpiece. Handwritten notations that have partly faded or rubbed away are visible within bottom border of this photo, with two areas of emulsion loss at the bottom edge. Some staining is visible in the lower-left corner that is far more pronounced on verso. Verso displays stamping that appears to read "This Picture Not Cleared For Duplication" or perhaps "Distribution." Simply one of the most important images ever taken by a war correspondent, presented here in a larger format than is typically found. Authenticated by PSA/DNA as a Type III photo and their full LOA is provided.
