1930s Goudey and National Chicle premiums are outstanding ways to obtain lower-cost examples of some of the game's bigger names. In this case a 1938 Goudey #274 Joe DiMaggio easily runs into the four figure range with higher-grade examples stretching even further. Yet this example of the 1936 R314 "Wide Pen" premium issue a far more attractive photographic issue that also features Hall of Fame manager Joe McCarthy is typically obtained for far less. By 1938 DiMaggio had led the American league in home runs with 46 (in 1937) and had hit .323 and .346 in his first two seasons in the majors. He was still on the heels of his first of three MVP seasons however his ascendence to the upper levels of baseball fame right in front of him. The card graded GOOD 30 by SGC has achieved the grade due to discoloration on the reverse likely from being in a scrapbook. The card obverse is very attractive however an excellent way to obtain a card of Joltin' Joe in his early years without breaking the bank.
