Duke Kahanamoku was America"s first "extreme" sports star. Initially a competitive swimmer Kahanamoku told the gold medal in the 100 meter freestyle in the 1912 Stockholm Olympics and won two more gold medals in the 1920 Olympics in Antwerp. He won a silver medal in the 1924 Paris Olympics and played on the US water polo team in the 1932 Summer Olympics. During this time he traveled internationally to give swimming exhibitions popularizing the sport of surfing along the way. In 1925 in Newport Beach California he used his surfboard to help rescue eight men from a capsized fishing boat.Kahanamoku was also an actor appearing in several films while living in California in the 1920s. The first person inducted into both the Swimming Hall of Fame and the Surfing Hall of Fame he is also a member of the US Olympic Hall of Fame. After retiring he served 13 terms as sheriff of Honolulu Hawaii.This card from the 1933 Goudey Sport Kings set is one of the most popular and valuable cards not related to one of the four major American sports.
