Francis Joseph "Shag" Shaughnessy played just parts of two seasons in the major leagues including one game with the 1905 Senators and eight with the 1908 Philadelphia Athletics. He was best known as president of the International League where he was elected in 1936 and continued to serve for 24 years. Shaughnessy who received his law degree from Notre Dame in 1906 essentially invented the minor league baseball playoff system. He also served as the first paid football coach at McGill University in Montreal and as the bench coach of the Ottawa Senators of the National Hockey Association.
