The card issue referred to as the "Star Player Candy" issue of 1928 is one of the most rare of its era. Produced by John H. Dockman & Sons (the producers of the E92 issue under the Dockman brand name), the method of distribution is unclear, the total number of cards generally thought to be 72 (the Standard Catalog lists a 73rd card of Lou Gehrig but such a card is only rumored to exist and no proof has ever been produced). Several years ago we learned of a complete set discovered in the midwest which was ultimately consigned to auction and sold intact; the discovery of that set yielded news of the existence of a second complete set, the only two known. The cards are simply impossible to find with examples virtually never becoming available. Presented here is one of the most attractive examples we have ever seen, a well-centered and clean card of Browns pitcher Sam Gray. That Gray is pictured in his Browns uniform is an indication that the set was actually produced during 1928, as he was traded to St. Louis from the Athletics in December of 1927.
