Incredible 1951 action photograph of 19-year-old Mickey Mantle flying high during his rookie season, though in vain, to rob a home run from the right field stands at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. This original Type I photo depicts the very same play, though from an alternate angle, immortalized on Mantle's 1956 Topps card as the action image in the lower-left corner (card shown for illustration purposes and is not included). Interestingly, as evidenced by this photo, some artistic license was taken when illustrating this play for the card as Mantle is shown completing the catch when in-fact the ball ended up in the stands. A fresh to the hobby example and the only Type I photo in the hobby featuring this image we're aware of. Photo remains clean and bright, in excellent condition overall with evidence of gentle gentle handing wear after having been stored with remnants of a newspaper archive for many decades. Verso includes credit stamping from both the Associated Press and the New York Times beneath original paper caption describing the scene. Authenticated and encapsulated as a Type I photo by PSA/DNA. Also includes LOA from PSA/DNA confirming the image's connection to Mantle's 1956 Topps #135 card.
