After 15 remarkable seasons in Detroit, Ty Cobb piloted the Detroit Tigers as player/manager from 1921 until his retirement in November of 1926. Enticed by the prospect of a fresh start and joining forces with the legendary Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics, Cobb signed with Mack for 1927 and 1928. The presented original Type I photograph features The Georgia Peach sporting a handsome, bright-white Philadelphia Athletics uniform while selecting from lumber arranged before his team's dugout. Shot at Yankee Stadium where the Athletics opened their 1927 campaign, this image was very likely captured during Cobb's first ever appearance for the Philadelphia Athletics. While no date has been added by the issuing service, research has revealed another photo, shot during the same moment, does exist within the hobby and includes a handwritten date of "04/12/1927" on verso, corresponding with Opening Day at Yankee Stadium and Cobb's debut for Mack's men. This is further evidenced by the background of the companion piece to this photo, one of Zack Wheat found elsewhere in this auction, with red-white-and-blue bunting in the background, indicative of Opening Day and World Series games. An endlessly appealing 8" x 10" photograph of the Deadball Era's greatest player, with perfect tonal contrast allowing for a spectacular look at Cobb's split grip and bright flannels against a dark background running diagonally across the image. Extreme upper-right corner of this photo has chipped away and verso displays some obvious toning, more evident towards the left edge. Handwritten pencil notations are present along the top edge of verso with credit stamping from Wide World applied at the center. A fresh to the hobby example that has been authenticated and encapsulated as a Type I photo by PSA/DNA.
