Tyrus Raymond Cobb, affectionately known as The Georgia Peach, dominated the highest level of professional baseball on the basepaths and at the plate for nearly two decades during the Deadball Era. By 1921 Cobb had been hired to both play and manage his Detroit Tigers, embracing that role until 1926 before joining Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics for 1927 and 1928. The offered original Type I photograph depicts a 37-year-old Ty Cobb at Yankee Stadium c.1925, posing for photographers on the top step of his dugout with period equipment in the foreground. A familiar, often reproduced image of Cobb that served as the basis for renowned sports artist Graig Kreindler's original oil on canvas work "Old Energy," depicting the all-time-great center fielder in one of the most iconic uniforms the sport has known. To the best of our knowledge this is only the second original example of this photo to surface in the hobby, with the other example heavily trimmed around all four edges. Measuring a full 8" x 10", three thin white borders surround Cobb, with chipping constrained to within those borders along the right edge. A 2" tear extends from one of the chipped areas towards Cobbs left shoulder but does little to diminish from the overall attractiveness of this photographic masterwork. Credit stamping from Wide World has been applied at center of verso with a handwritten identifier of Cobb along the top edge. Authenticated and encapsulated as a Type I photo by PSA/DNA.
