The Sporting Life W600 cabinet cards, distributed over a span of ten
years commencing in 1902, are a sprawling issue of cabinets offered as a
premium by the Sporting Life newspaper. With more than 700
known subjects featuring the work of the renowned Boston photographer
Carl Horner, the set is known today for its quality, stunning portraits
and impressive scarcity. As this attractive Three Finger Brown shows, a
black-and-white photo is framed using a light olive green theme, which
includes an ornate advertisement at the bottom.
The wide borders
of these Cabinets have always served to protect the
central image and that's exactly what has happened here with this example of Chicago pitcher "Doc" White, graded VG 3 by SGC. Often times, the technical grade of very
old cards is
largely driven by the condition of the back, but the reverse on this one is extremely clean, save for a small number 15 written in pencil near the lower left corner. Centering on the front is gorgeous, and while the corners show light wear, the edges are nice and the border has saved the image itself from any noteworthy flaws. It is clean and bright with bold printing and great contrast. This is an extraordinary example seldom seen with this sort of visual appeal.
This
is the only Type II example SGC has ever graded of this W600 Sporting
Life Cabinet of G. Harry "Doc" White in his street clothes.
