Louis "Lou" Bierbauer played Second Base for the Philadelphia Athletics of the American Association from 1886 through 1889. Bob Gamble was his teammate in 1888, pitching only one game in his career. Gamble gave up 10 hits and 10 runs (8 of them earned) while taking the loss. Gamble has three additional cards in the N172 set, while Bierbauer only has four, despite having the much longer and more successful career. However, the two are linked for eternity thanks to this fun card of Bierbauer tagging Gamble as he tries to slide into second base.
The corners are rounded and there is some light staining toward the bottom of the front, but the image is dynamic and clear. There is some writing on the back of the card which does not come through to the front, which still has tremendous eye appeal due to its nice contrast and the unique poses of the players. This is one of just 23 dual-player cards in the massive N172 issue where both players are identified. SGC has only ever graded 2 total examples of this 1887 N172 Old Judge, with only one receiving a higher grade than the GOOD 2 offered here.
