The first series of cards in the T206 set were issued beginning in
1909 in cigarette and loose tobacco packs through 16 different brands
owned by the American Tobacco Company. It is a landmark set in the
history of baseball card collecting due to its size and rarity, with
cards of over 500 major and minor-league players issued in the set
through 1911. It is known informally as the "White Border" set due to
the
distinctive white borders surrounding the quality color lithographs on
each card.
A portrait of Billy Nattress before a solid sky blue background adorns this beautiful example from the T206 set. Centering is nearly perfect, but is a hair west on the canvas. The edges and corners are sharp for the grade, with only the bottom right exhibiting some softness. Some light tobacco staining stands out because so much of the card is white, with Nattress' uniform and the white borders taking up roughly 50% of the real estate. The Polar Bear back is tremendously dark and bold, with more tobacco staining on the reverse, keeping the card from grading even higher than it already has.
SGC has only ever graded 18 total examples of this T206 with a Polar Bear back, with only four receiving a higher grade than the VG+ 3.5 offered here of Buffalo's Billy Nattress.
