The first series of cards in the T206 set were issued beginning in
1909 in cigarette and loose tobacco packs through 16 different brands
owned by the American Tobacco Company. It is a landmark set in the
history of baseball card collecting due to its size and rarity, with
cards of over 500 major and minor-league players issued in the set
through 1911. It is known informally as the "White Border" set due to
the
distinctive white borders surrounding the quality color lithographs on
each card.
The Hall of Famer comes set with his hands at his chest before
delivering a pitch in this white cap version of his T206 card. A blue
sky and green grass background add plenty of color to this image which
is otherwise dominated by white. Centering is north on the canvas, with corners and edges consistent with the grade. The thin black line at the top border is broken at some points, possibly due to a light surface abrasion. The printing on the Piedmont back is gorgeously bold, though some soiling along the bottom edge and near the top left corner keep the reverse from perfection. An immense amount of eye appeal on this one.
