The first series of cards in the T206 set were issued beginning in
1909 in cigarette and loose tobacco packs through 16 different brands
owned by the American Tobacco Company. It is a landmark set in the
history of baseball card collecting due to its size and rarity, with
cards of over 500 major and minor-league players issued in the set
through 1911. It is known informally as the "White Border" set due to
the
distinctive white borders surrounding the quality color lithographs on
each card.
Carl Lundgren stands with his hands at his belt in the Chicago variant of this T206. While his Cubs uniform is a little drab, the beautiful blue and orange sky and the bright green grass in the background add enough color to make it pop. A large vertical crease down the center of the card and another in the bottom right corner, along with some light tobacco soiling around the edges, keep this card from grading higher. Some paper loss on the Piedmont back further explain the card's technical grade, but there is still plenty of eye appeal on this one. What makes this card desirable, however, is the rarity of the back - while not quite one of the "Elite 11," the card is quite rare with the Piedmont 350 back.
