John McGraw's Hall of Fame catcher, Roger Bresnahan of the Giants, revolutionized the position on Opening Day, 1907 when he introduced shin guards to the major leagues. Two years later McGraw traded away his pioneering backstop to the St. Louis Cardinals where he'd serve as player-manager from 1909-12. This original Type 1 photo from George Grantham Bain's photo service features a fantastic portrait image of Bresnahan during his time with the Cardinals. Shot at Hilltop Park (home of the Highlanders), where the Giants were forced to play home games for months following a fire at the Polo Grounds early in 1911. The photo measures 4" x 5" with a date stamp of May 20, 1911 on verso above an affixed newspaper clipping. George Grantham Bain credit stamping also appears but is partially obscured. Authenticated and encapsulated as a Type 1 photo by PSA/DNA.
