Wally Andrews played for the
Memphis Browns of the Southern League from 1886-1888, then switched over
to play for the Omaha Omahogs (aka the Lambs) of the Western
Association in 1889 and 1890, the final two seasons of his career. One of five poses of Andrews in the N172 issue, this entry depicts Andrews with a bat in his hands, ready to strike a ball which is shoulder high on its way to the plate.
The
clarity and contrast of the image are both wonderful. Andrews is fully
visible, with the details of his face, uniform, and the equipment fully
visible. The text at the bottom of the card is also dark and
clear. There is some light paper loss along the right edge, and to the left of Andrews' left shin, and the card is slightly miscut with the text from the card above it slightly visible at the top border. The Authentic grade comes from a stamp which appears on the back of the card, but does not affect the front, however, the scarcity of this example far outweighs any aesthetic issues of this highly sought-after issue.
This is the only example of this 1887 N172 Old Judge which PSA has ever graded.
