William Henry "Bill" Holbert's 12-year professional career came to an end after the 1888 season which saw him play just 15 games for Brooklyn of the American Association. Despite his short tenure with the club, Holbert has seven different poses in
the N172 set. This one, which depicts the Brooklyn Catcher crouching in his catcher's mask, with his hands at knee height, ready to receive a ball, is the only example to have been graded by PSA.
Centering is nice, maybe a touch north on the canvas. Corners are sharp for the grade, with the edges showing signs of chipping especially on the right and bottom. Holbert's mask is the star of the image, looking almost more like an early scuba diving helmet than baseball equipment, but it gives a great glimpse into the elementary gear worn by catchers at the time. The printing is well done, with the dark shades remaining bold after all these years. A crease runs vertically through the center of the card, but is more visible on the back. A stain on the back helps further explain the card's technical grade, though does not affect the front.
