Historic 8" x 10" Type 1 photo from Yankee Stadium as outfielder Roger Maris takes a curtain call following his 61st home run of the 1961 campaign. Maris battled teammate Mickey Mantle all year for the single-season home run record of 60 held by George Herman "Babe" Ruth until Mantle's run ended late in the season with his total at 54. The Babe's record stood from September 30, 1927 until Maris surpassed him on this day, October 1, 1961, the final day of the season. Central image of photo has been taken from a high angle and presents in soft focus across entirety of the shot. Paper caption affixed to verso contextualizes the action and is dated to the following day. Verso also includes credit stamping from United Press International identifying them as the issuing service. Includes full LOA from PSA/DNA.
