Pair of difficult near-sets issued in 1947 and 1948 by Smith's Clothiers, both featuring members of the Oakland Oaks of the PCL. The 2" x 3 cards closely resemble the Remar Bread issues of the same period. While both sets are highlighted by cards of Hall of Famer Casey Stengel (similar to the Remar issues), the 1947 Smith's set is driven by an extremely rare card of Max Marshall, which is considerably more difficult than the rest of the set, and is much more valuable. We have taken the liberty of sending both Stengel cards to SGC; the 1947 issue was returned in a VG 3 holder while the 1948 Stengel came back in an EX 5. For the most part, those grades are consistent with the rest of the set, as the 1947 card are slightly more worn than the 1948s. The 1947 Marshall card is clearly in POOR condition, the remaining cards average VG with some lesser.
The sets are missing just three cards for completion: the 1947 issue is missing card #13 of Tony Sabol, while the 1948 issue is missing card #5 of Lloyd Christopher and card #17 of Billy Martin. Otherwise, a difficult grouping of cards, including one of the most rare PCL cards of the era. 47 cards total.
