Spectacular card from the 1948 Philadelphia Bulletin issue. Originating from the Philadelphia Bulletin newspaper, the cards were cut-outs that appeared in the "Fun Book" section of the Sunday paper, each part of a four-card panel including members of the Philadelphia Athletics and Phillies. They were intended to be cut out and pasted to cardboard, then folded at the dotted line in the base to create a "stand up" figure.
Despite the fact that the Bulletin was the largest daily newspaper in the country, the cards are extremely rare today, and naturally are very difficult to find in high grades. PSA has graded just 11 examples of Phillies players (and just two Athletics), with this single example of Richie Ashburn's "card" the only one to grade as high as EX 5. This example has the added benefit of being the earliest and most rare collectible of Hall of Famer Richie Ashburn. In outstanding condition, the card has been carefully cut at the borders, a sharp and clean example with just the tiniest hint of surface wear in the center of the card in the green area behind Ashburn. A seldom-seen collectible, the earliest and most rare rookie card of Richie Ashburn.
