Legendary ace Leroy "Satchel" Paige of the Kansas City Monarchs tosses at Yankee Stadium in this exceptional Type 1 photograph. An iconic 1942 depiction of Paige that has been heavily reproduced across the decades, this original example boasts superior image quality and survives in highly presentable overall condition despite obvious use by a publication. The image hails from August 2, 1942 when a reported crowd of 30,000 witnessed Paige and fellow future Hall of Famer Hilton Smith shut out the New York Cubans 9-0 before the teams agreed to call the game in the 7th inning. Verso includes large and detailed paper caption from Wide World Photos providing context to the action, while a second small paper caption mentions the East-West Negro Leagues All-Star Game that took place two weeks later. Paige famously became the first black pitcher in American League history upon his debut with the Cleveland Indians in 1948, and several photos do exist within the hobby from his time with the Tribe. Exceedingly more scarce, however, are photos such as the offered example featuring Paige in a Negro Leagues uniform. Local papers of the era simply did not cover the Negro Leagues regularly and, as a result, little demand existed for major news photo services to provide images of the players. Typical handling wear common to working news service photos can be found scattered about both surfaces, including: pinholes, smudging, light creasing, and editorial notations. Measures 7" x 9" overall. Authenticated and encapsulated as a Type 1 photo by PSA/DNA.
