Beautiful photograph of Pittsburgh leftfielder Fred Clarke as distributed on October 7, 1909 by the Sporting News as
part of an issue that featured 100 different supplements distributed
between 1909 and 1913. This offering has been well-preserved and is now
protected in a PSA slab. Despite exhibiting
age-related wear - mainly toning and edge chipping - this offering has tremendous eye appeal.
The details on this photo are spectacular, particularly the softness of Clarke's glove, and the rigidity of his cleats. Clarke went on to lead the Pirates to the World Series title less than 10 days after the release of this supplement, hitting 2 home runs and adding 7 RBI as Pittsburgh beat Detroit in 7 games.
The piece had previously been folded in half, with the resulting crease being much more visible when viewing the back. While the piece also has some staining on the back,
the image is still extremely presentable and would make for
an excellent display. An outstanding document, particularly
interesting to Yankees collectors.
