We have made the decision to break up an EXTRAORDINARY 1963 Topps set
- the #4 Master Set on the PSA Set Registry. The 1963 set is a
particularly difficult set to complete in high grade due to Topps' poor
quality control in the era which resulted in
considerable print defects. The large and colorful border at the bottom
simultaneously lends a distinctive design element and a condition
challenge, as they are extremely susceptible to
chipping and wear.
The example offered here is card #147, World Series Game 6 "Pierce Stars in 3-Hit Victory", graded
MINT 9. With their backs against the wall, the Giants kept their victory hopes alive by whipping New York, 5-2. Crack southpaw Billy Pierce, an ex-American Leaguer, sparkled on the mound, allowing the Yankees only three hits.
The left hander has finished his motion and the ball is halfway to the plate in this wonderful action shot from 1962 World Series Game 6. The bright blue border and green diamond inset are both lovely, as the card exhibits sharp corners and clean, white borders. A slight bit of diamond cutting and a little nick on the bottom border toward the left corner keep this card from grading at a 10.
You won't find a nicer example of this card. And that isn't hyperbole. Not a single example ever seen by PSA has received a higher grade than the card offered here.
