We have made the decision to break up an EXTRAORDINARY 1963 Topps set
- the #4 Master Set on the PSA Set Registry. The 1963 set is a
particularly difficult set to complete in high grade due to Topps' poor
quality control in the era which resulted in
considerable print defects. The large and colorful border at the bottom
simultaneously lends a distinctive design element and a condition
challenge, as they are extremely susceptible to
chipping and wear.
The example offered here is card #144, World Series Game 3 "Maris Sparks Yankee Rally", graded
MINT 9. Roger Maris' timely hit and heads-up base-running helped the Yanks to gain the victory in a pivotal Game 3 with the Series tied at 1. No team in the Series won back-to-back games, with the Yankees eventually taking the title after 7 hard-fought games.
The image on this card is a rarely-seen angle for baseball fans. Bright colors and crisp edges with sharp corners give this card with the unusual perspective even more eye appeal. Only a slight bit of diamond cutting and a minor registration issue printing the yellow bottom border a fraction of an inch too high keep this card from grading at a 10.
Only 1 of the more than 700 examples graded by PSA have ever received a higher grade than the MINT 9 offered here.
