His name may draw a blank stare when brought up today but Joe Heving fashioned a 13 year career in the majors as an early relief specialist and pitched his last game for the Braves in 1945 at the age of 44. He was with their crosstown rivals in the AL for 1939 on his 1939 Play Ball card, his rambunctious looking signature rolling across the card in black ink and graded PSA/DNA 9. This is a really fantastic looking autograph! The card originates from the Shibe Park collection of autographed cards, an original owner collection carefully collected by a teenage boy who, in 1939 and 1940, obtained many autographs from players arriving at the train station near Shibe Park, and continued for many years to obtain signatures in person and through the mail. Despite paper loss on the reverse, we can also see that the original collector applied the date of the autograph on the card reverse - July 5, 1939, a date that Boston defeated the home Philadelphia Athletics, 6-4.  Having did not pitch that day, though he did pitch one inning in relief of Emerson Dickman the day before.
