The fabulously named Johnny Peacock unfortunately had a very drab career as a Catcher with three teams over nine seasons in the majors. He spent most of that time with the Red Sox and was on the team when he was snapped for the 1939 Play Ball set. His signature here is finely laid down in black ink and is appropriately "showy" in execution. PSA/DNA 8 for the autograph, which is has some lift, especially toward the end of his last name yet looks superb in reality. Peacock died in 1981 and missed the show circuit that was just starting to boom, this combination being the sole graded example. The card originates from the Shibe Park collection of autographed cards, an original owner collection carefully collected by a teenage boy who, in 1939 and 1940, obtained many autographs from players arriving at the train station near Shibe Park, and continued for many years to obtain signatures in person and through the mail. Some paper remnants from scrapbook removal appear on the card reverse, but more interesting is the date applied to the reverse.  The card was signed on July 5 of 1939, a "getaway day" for the visiting Boston Red Sox, who defeated the Athletics that day, 6-4.  Peacock was the starting catcher that day, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and helping Elden Auker get the win for Boston.
