During the late 1930s, the Cincinnati Reds were a formidable foe. Managed by Bill McKechnie, the Reds were 82-68-1 in 1938 and then finished first in the N.L. standings in 1939 with a record of 97-57-2. Presented here is a Cincinnati Reds-themed ink blotter from that period of time. Blotters, of course, were produced to absorb excess ink when writing with fountain pens. The blotting paper used was always a textured, thick paper specifically made to quickly absorb excess ink. The blotter was sponsored by “Janson, ‘The Broker’" (a nearby food products broker) and calls attention to five “Redlegs” who were named to the N.L. All-Star team: Johnny Vander Meer, Paul Derringer, Ernie Lombardi, Frank McCormick and Ival Goodman. The blotter, which measures approx. 4" x 9", shows several blotting ink remnants of the reverse.
