The Rugg photography studio of Minneapolis was responsible for the photos of the 1888 Minneapolis Millers (Western Association) players that appeared in the N172 Old Judge issue. Baseball-Reference.com shows shortstop John Shaw as playing for five different teams that season, with records of just two games with the Millers, but he still appears in six different N172 poses in a Minneapolis uniform. This example, card #414-5, is a handsome one, with a crisp image with excellent contrast. Wear to the mount and two small pinholes at the top and bottom center reduces the technical grade, but the detail and clarity of the photo itself makes this one of the more desirable Old Judge proofs we have handled.
