Hal Chase was a longtime first baseman who played 15 seasons (1905 to 1919) in the major leagues, nine of them with the New York Highlanders. Offered here is an advertising postcard from The Sporting News in 1941 that’s touting as part of its upcoming weekly content: “What Has Become of Hal Chase” and “Former Great First Sacker Rues Mistakes.” The postcard, which measures 3.25” high by 4.5” wide, was a promotional tool sent to potential subscribers. The postcard further reads: “Subscribe now. Receive the first issue containing the Hal Chase revelation to be followed by a second installment – and THE SPORTING NEWS for six months and photographs of the pennant winners in the two big leagues. All at special reduced price of $2, for six months’ subscription.” The back of the postcard (dated Sept. 8, 1941) shows the mailing address of the recipient in Oskaloosa, Iowa and even reveals the price for a postage stamp in those days: one cent.
