While known primarily for its gorgeous baseball cards, the N162 Goodwin Champions set also featured five pugilists from the rough and tumble days of bareknuckle boxing. A lithographic tour de force from the 19th Century, the cards were printed in Philadelphia by Geo. S. Harris & Sons, a firm that clearly knew what it was doing, and distributed in packs of Goodwin Co.'s Gypsy Queen cigarettes. Featured here is the first Jack Dempsey, whose nickname was Nonpareil and who was the first World Middleweight Champion. He went 65-3 before tuberculosis ended his career in the ring. Graded PSA 2, some small spots of paper loss are seen on the front, which sports the dark, rich colors this set in known for. The reverse also has some paper loss, reflecting a prior life in a keepsake album.
