Acknowledged as the first Heavyweight Champion of gloved boxing, "The Boston Strongboy" held the heavyweight title from February 7, 1882 until he was defeated by fellow heavyweight James Corbet on September 7, 1892. The offered c.1889 cabinet photograph of Sullivan measures approx 4" x 6" and exhibits moderate toning along the edges of mount and in the top-right corner of photo. A piece of the lower-right corner has fallen away from the image which otherwise presents quite well. Sullivan's attractive faux signature has been applied below his portrait in black ink and reverse of mount includes a nifty record of Sullivan's career reminiscent of modern day baseball cards.
