The Boston American was a daily newspaper that started publishing in 1904. It included unique flip books in its Sunday editions to help ignite sales. Shown here is a flip book (2.25" wide by 2.75" high) that features Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher Mordecai “Three Finger” Brown. Flip books of that era, printed in black and white, showed successive images of the spotlighted player or celebrity and when flipped, a short movie would be displayed. The book shows “Three-Fingered Brown” on the front, calling him “The Famous Twirler of the Chicago Nationals” and includes “Presented by the Sunday American. The back provides simple instructions as collectors were to hold it as shown, “letting the pages flip forward at the right speed.” Because it was issued only in a single edition of the Boston-based newspaper, it is considered quite rare. Though faded by age with flaking corners and sides showing, it remains intact by virtue of its original staple still holding it in place.
