The New York Giants' team publication for young fans was called "Grandstand Manager " and often featured contests for kids to enter with small prize drawings and such to keep fans engaged with the team. Typically kids treasured these trinkets tearing them open within minutes. Presented here is a remarkable anomaly: a prize directly from the "Grandstand Manager" publication mailed to a young Connecticut boy in the early 1950s. Said prize a pen and pencil set was delivered in a small chipboard box stamped and mailed with no additional wrapping. The prize reached its destination and then was never used! The resultant pen and pencil set remains in remarkably pristine unused condition all its original gloss and "like new" sturdiness still visible. The fountain pen has none of the telltale ink stains of used pens of the era. The mechanical pencil still retains all its graphite unused not a single stitch of wear noted. The box which has suffered from the rigors of time remains intact though the edges and seams are weakened with age. While baseball-shaped pens and pencils have been around forever and are quite plentiful this is the first piece of this type that we have ever encountered. Its incredible condition simply makes it even more fascinating. To find a piece such as this completely unused is particularly unusual. The pen and pencil in mint condition the shipping box worn but still intact this is an incredible piece of baseball lore.
