The much-heralded 1947 debut of Jackie Robinson with the Brooklyn Dodgers opened doors for African-American ballplayers all across the country. Just four months later with much less fanfare Dan Bankhead became baseball's first African-American pitcher breaking in with the Dodgers (and becoming roommates with Robinson). A veteran of the Negro Leagues (along with his three brothers) Bankhead never really caught on in the majors pitching parts of three seasons with the Dodgers and compiling a 9-5 record with a 5.20 earned run average. Bankhead's 1950-51 Toleteros card pictures him in the Puerto Rican Winter League where he remained a dominant pitcher without the pressures placed on him in American baseball.
