I have one to sell!
The 1949 amateur free agent draft was a positive one for Walter O'Malley's Dodgers with the team signing future big leaguers Chico Carrasquel Gino Cimoli and Don Zimmer among others. This February 1949 letter from team president and GM Branch Rickey initially accompanied a memo to Rickey detailing the results of that draft. Dated February 3 1949 the letter reads: "Dear Walter: I think you will be interested in the results of the draft by and from the Brooklyn organization and I am enclosing a memorandum covering the subject. Very truly yours Branch Rickey President: By 1951 Rickey was no longer affiliated with the Dodgers having had much of his power stripped away when O'Malley became the majority owner of the Dodgers in 1950. Still Rickey's legacy looms large not only in the history of the Dodgers but in the history of America having been the executive responsible for signing Jackie Robinson to a minor league contract in 1945 and promoting him to the Dodgers in 1947. The letter is well-preserved with typical folds at the top and bottom third to insert into an envelope and some minor creasing and a small tear along the right edge consistent with being placed inside a smaller book or binder and two very minor and inconsequential stains are present at the center panel of the letter. Two hole punches at the top of the letter indicate it was once filed and some notations and shorthand in both ink and pencil adorn the top edge. Otherwise the colorful Dodgers letterhead is in outstanding condition given its age and the signature applied in ballpoint pen is unblemished. Full LOA from JSA Authentication.
