Though few Hall of Famers in the N172 issue are particularly rare, Clark Griffith is among the tougher subjects. This example has been graded VG 3 by SGC, a card with sharp edges and square corners, the subject barely visible due to significant fading. Cards like this beg a conversation about how grading companies handle Old Judge cards, as light paper loss or glue stains on the blank backs of the card are more harmful to the technical grade of the cards than a heavily-faded image. It is, in our opinion, quite ridiculous, as we have seen cards with impossibly clear and well-defined images receive a POOR grade due to a small spot of paper loss from scrapbook removal, yet cards like this Griffith can receive a VG assessment. Regardless, the card is VG according to the current grading standards of both SGC and likely PSA. Despite the obvious issues with the faded image, a very desirable and fairly challenging Hall of Famer from the issue.
