Renowned Canadian artist Jennifer Ettinger is possibly best known for the enormous artwork that graced the exterior of Nat Bailey Stadium (home of the Toronto Blue Jays' minor league affiliate Vancouver Canadians). Having attained a degree in Fine Arts from Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in Vancouver, her work has appeared in numerous shows in both Canada and the U.S., including a shared show with W.P. Kinsella, a slide presentation at the SABR convention in San Francisco, and three of her "Reflections on Baseball" pieces being included in A Good Eye: Artists at the Ballpark at Seafirst Gallery in Seattle. Her work has been featured on the cover of many books, and has been displayed in various museums, galleries and public places throughout the US and Canada.
We are privileged to offer this beautiful work entitled "Matty On Blue," one of a series of three different paintings that Ettinger created using this famous image of Mathewson. According to Ettinger, she painted the series "as a way to represent how recognizable a handful of ballplayers are when not in uniform - because of their enduring qualities off the ball field." The gorgeous painting sets Mathewson's portrait against an abstract blue and peach background, professionally framed to a finished size of 20" x 16". The piece is a stunning wash of color and texture, bringing a famous Paul Thompson photograph from the early 20th Century to life. Instantly recognizable, timeless and yet contemporary, a wonderful work by one of the modern masters of sports art.
