Already a superstar with three consecutive home run titles to his credit Mike Schmidt hit his peak in the 1980 season winning his first of three MVP awards and leading the Philadelphia Phillies to a World Championship. Schmidt would lead the league with 48 home runs and 121 RBI accumulating a career-high 342 total bases and winning a Gold Glove (his fifth consecutive in what would ultimately be a streak of nine). Mike Schmidt is the best third baseman in baseball history and his 1980 season is arguably his peak. Presented here is an extraordinary bat from that magical season a 34.2-ounce Louisville Slugger model K55 that shows considerable signs of use. The bat exhibits many ball marks and stitch impressions along with cleat marks on all sides red and green bat rack marks and the impression of a weighted batting donut. The handle exhibits a visible coating of pine tar. Despite all the signs of use the bat is not cracked. What makes this bat more interesting is the signs at the upper handle that a ring of tape has been removed from the bat. The ring was applied by Schmidt in an effort to disguise the bat as an Adirondack the company with which Schmidt had a contract. Adirondack bats are noted by the red ring at the upper handle. Schmidt bats along with bats of his teammate Greg Luzinski occasionally disguised Louisville Slugger bats this way. The tape along with the red bat rack streaks (the Veterans Stadium bat racks were painted red) provide clear evidence of use enough to obtain the grade of GU 10 by John Taube at PSA/DNA. An exceptional bat exhibiting clear evidence of game use by Mike Schmidt during his MVP season of 1980. Full LOA from John Taube of PSA/DNA.
