LATE NOTE: A copy of the MEARS LOA has been uploaded to this lot listing. Early St. Louis Cardinals jerseys are among the most highly desirable in the hobby the twin cardinals resting on a golden bat being one of the most classic logos in sports. This wonderful flannel jersey dates to 1952 as worn by pitcher Cloyd Boyer one of three baseball-playing brothers (the others being defensive wizard Clete Boyer and slugger Ken Boyer). Cloyd pitched four seasons with the Cardinals between 1949 and 1952 and threw 110 innings with the 1955 Kansas City Athletics later becoming a coach with the Yankees. This gorgeous jersey is in outstanding condition a size 44 Rawlings flannel with some minor staining here and there consistent with use. Boyer's name and season are stitched into the tail. As was the case with many jerseys during the era the jersey underwent a vintage number change at some point after Boyer's career ended - his number 24 was changed to the number 64 currently stitched on the back as the number 24 was given to outfielder Joe Frazier for the 1954 season. The vintage number change has resulted in a three-point deduction in MEARS' grade reducing the technical grade to A7. The LOA specifies that the number change was vintage as Boyer clearly surrendered the jersey to the team who simply reused it with the new number 64. Regardless an outstanding Cardinals jersey with 1952 use from a member of the popular ballplaying Boyer family.
