The T227 "Series of Champions" issue is a 24-card set issued in packages of Honest Long Cut and Miner's Tobacco packages in 1912. A multi-sport set the issue features just four baseball players: Home Run Baker Chief Bender Ty Cobb and Rube Marquard. The issue does however feature a number of other athletes and sporting figures among with a few racehorses. The set is the only one that features baseball cards with advertisements for Miner's Extra Tobacco on the reverse. The issue is notoriously condition-sensitive with the overwhelming majority of the cards found in poor or fair condition. Aside from the larger size of the cards there is really no great theory as to why this is however it is clearly the case - of 654 cards from the issue graded by PSA just 33 have graded above the EX level. SGC's population report on the issue is difficult to ascertain however the condition percentages are similar. Presented here is a near-set from the issue needing just four cards for completion. Each card has been graded utilizing the services of both PSA and SGC. A condition breakdown of the set is as follows: SGC GOOD 2 (6 cards): Willie Hoppe Matt McGrath Ralph Mulford Ad Wolgast C. Zbysko; Dixie IV PSA FAIR 1.5 (3 cards): Abe Attell Frank Klaus W.J. Kramer SGC FAIR 1.5 (5 cards): Budd Goodwin Harold H. Hilton Jack Johnson Jack McDermott Melvin W. Sheppard PSA PR 1 (1 card): Johnny Coulon SGC PR 1 (3 cards): Chief Bender (HOF) Alfred DeOro Rube Marquard (HOF); PSA A (1 card): Ess H. Kay; SGC A (1 card): Uhlan. An attractive collection of cards from one of the more difficult tobacco sets needing just four cards for completion. 20 cards total.
