The Goudey Gum baseball cards produced in 1934 were meant to be affixed in one of two premium albums (ostensibly with glue) which have become very rare today. The albums were available by mail in exchange for 50 gum wrappers and each contains individual pages for each team along with some information on the teams their history and records. Because of their intended purpose albums are rarely found without significant wear and this pair is no exception; both books show the telltale signs of having had cards affixed in the album"s pages: holes glue residue and in the case of the American League album remnants of some of the card backs themselves. Both books exhibit color fading on the covers and the pages are pulling away from their saddle stitching (the staples that bind the books together). The pages of the AL book are particularly flimsy and folded as its owner clearly cherished the book (having written player positions inside for each team one can surmise that at least one and possibly two Lou Gehrigs were once housed in this album). Despite all this these are very difficult to find in any condition as most have been lost to history and the majority of those that have survived were used for their intended purpose and thus are very well-worn.This is an extraordinarily scarce set of picture albums designed to house one of the hobby"s most popular prewar card sets an excellent companion piece for any Goudey baseball collector.
